This album contains a total of 79 photos taken at the first event of Series 6 at Manchester Velodrome. This was Stuart O'Grady's first appearance at the Velodrome whilst Bradley McGee, on the other hand, made his final competitive appearance.

Presentation Night 2008

A SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS NIGHT was held at The Penrhos Arms, Llanfairpwll on Wednesday evening, 29 October.

Prizes were handed out to winners in the Mon-Arfon Cycling League, Anglesey TLI Road Races as well as some Gwynedd Cycling Association prizes. This album starts a picture of the Mon-Arfon League trophies.

LLANBERIS PASS (GCA) HILL CLIMB 2008

Anglesey TLI 4-Lap Road Race 07-09-08

These photos have been kindly supplied by Dei Huws. Please note that conditions for taking photos on the night were poor to say the least.

Dei has also greatly reduced the images in file size for web purposes - thereby further reducing image quality.

Therefore, should anyone wish to print any of these images, I recommend selecting a print size of not much more than around 6"x4".

Vol 1. (Telford Bridge & Menai Bridge Hill).

This album contains a total of 79 images over several pages. The first 35 were taken soon after the start and shows riders crossing from the mainland to Anglesey via the Thomas Telfor Bridge. From this angle, at this time in the morning, the sun is not ideally placed for taking pictures!

The remainder of the images in this folder were taken a little further up, on the hill between Menai Bridge and Llanfairpwll.

The first image is of the camouflaged Hawk, and the next is of the Zigzag one – both on the ground near the end of the runway. It was hazy so, other than a faint trace of the mountains just to the front of the camouflaged one, there's no background at all to these two - which is a pity. It was hot as well and, as is often the case at valley, some heat shimmer was coming off the ground and caused a little distortion to straight lines/edges.

As a little AF demonstration, Photo 03 (Tornado) is the eighth frame out of a 6.5 frame per second continuous shoot. Shot 04 is the seventh from another similar rapid-shoot sequence. Initial AF has obviously been acquired just before the shutter release is pressed. Then, as long as a focus point is kept over the subject, AF will track (and continuously adjust at the same time) with the moving subject – in this case, aircraft approaching at (I guess) anything between 125 and 150mph! All photos in each of the two sequences were equally as sharp (I could easily have taken my pick out of any one of them) but I've selected the last of each as the planes obviously are by then at their closest. Pic 05 is a crop of shot 04... just to give a closer look at some detail. Please bear in mind the speed of the Hawk, and that the initial AF had been acquired several meters (and several frames) previously.

On the subject of ISO, I can get away reasonably well with quite high numbers with the 40D. Image 06 was shot last Saturday in our front room (where there's never any direct sunlight coming in), plus I had closed the vertical blinds. I shot it at F4.5; Shutter: 1/160sec and ISO... a whopping 1600!! Pic 07 is just a portrait orientated crop of it for a closer look. I have successfully used ISO1600 in many of our non-flash Velodrome shots.

Everything you see here was taken with a 200 quid 55-250 zoom lens. I'm told that things could get significantly better with some of Canon's 'L' class lenses. There is also the fact that these samples (as is the case with everything in our galleries) have been grossly reduced in file sizes... some are only a few hundred Kilobytes each.

The Llanberis 31 Mile TT (18-05-08)

RAF Valley (31-03-08)

This was not an official Red Arrows display day; we were very privileged to receive a special invitation to RAF Valley, Anglesey to watch the Red Arrows performing some training manoeuvres.

The album finishes with a few (outside & inside) shots of the Seaking helicopter which is stationed at RAF Valley, and a couple of shots of one of the Hawks - also stationed here at Valley.
